English novelist Horace Walpole coined the word in 1754, basing it upon a lucky faculty enjoyed by the three heroes of the old Per- sian fairy tale “The Three Princes of Serendip.” Serendip is an old Arabic name for Ceylon (Sindhalawipa, “Lion Island”). |
