词汇 havelock
词源
havelock. Sir Henry Havelock (1795–1857) was rarely in fashion—it took him 23 years to be promoted to captain, for example—but this most British of British soldiers did eventu- ally do well. Havelock, an evangelist as well as a soldier, served over 34 years with the British Army in India, taking only one leave home in all that time. Known as “the Saint” to his men for his habit of trying to convert everyone under his com- mand to temperance and moderate ways, he was indeed among the fussiest and most tiresome of men. But as to his military ability and bravery there is no doubt. Havelock led his troops to many victories during the Sepoy Rebellion (1857) and is remembered for his recapture of Cawnpore and his stand at Lucknow until reinforcements arrived. The gen- eral died of dysentery brought on by the arduous Lucknow defense. The havelock, or covering, that he had devised for his “Ironsides” brigade wasn’t his invention; similar helmet cov- erings had been used since the Crusades. This trademark of the French Foreign Legion in films was fashioned of white linen, hanging halfway down the back and protecting the neck from the sun.
