词汇 | domino effect |
词源 | domino effect. The domino effect is the political theory holding that if one country or region is taken over by a neigh- bor, especially a Communist one, the nearby nations will fall one after another. Also called the domino theory, the term was coined in about 1960 and true or not, was especially applied to Vietnam and the rest of Southeast Asia. It is based on the way a row of dominoes falls when stood upright on the board or table in a common entertainment. The game takes its name from a likening of the pieces once used in it—then black backs and ivory faces—to “domino hoods” worn by priests in medieval times. Another possibility would be the likeness of the double- one domino to the domino, the small black eye mask with two holes for the eyes. |
