Dolly; cloning. Dolly is the name of the famous sheep (died on February 14, 2003) Scottish scientist Ian Wilmut and his coworkers cloned from another sheep, creating a genetically identical individual from body cells. The word clone, first re- corded in 1903, derives from the Greek klon, twig or slip, and originally referred to plant propagation. William Safire wrote in his New York Times op-ed column (7/16/01) that Dr. Wilmut “is an informed opponent of human replication; he knows how many of his attempts to clone a sheep failed, and believes simi- lar attempts with humans would be horrifying.” |
