dolphin. The dolphin, its name derived from the Latin del- phin, for “the cetaceous mammal,” has long been regarded as “man’s best finned friend.” Dolphinet is an old word for a female dolphin. Wrote Spenser: “The Lyon chose his mate, the Turtle Dove Her deare, the Dolphin his own Dolphinet.” In recent ex- periments dolphins have been taught to understand 25 words arranged in sentences.
