hanged high as Haman. The biblical Haman, King Ahasu- erus’s counselor, built a “fifty cubits high” gallows on which he planned to hang Mordecai and other Jews. But Esther turned the king against him and he was hanged on his own gallows, giving Ahasuerus pleasure, Mordecai great relief, and posterity the expression hanged high as Haman, “destroyed by one’s own machinations.” |
