Constellation. Though there is some question about its au- thenticity (some historians say it was broken up in 1854 and an entirely new ship built in its place), the Constellation, launched in 1797, is still called the oldest American warship afloat and honored as a national shrine in its Baltimore Harbor slip. It was renowned in its time for its valiant battle against the French In- surgente in 1799. “We would put any man to death on this ship for looking pale,” said a combative officer of its combative crew. |
