conscience makes cowards of us all. The proverb was proba- bly invented by Shakespeare in Hamlet (1601): “Thus con- science does make cowards of us all.” However, the Indian scholar Bidpai (or Pilpay) wrote c. 326 b.c.: “Guilty consciences always make people cowards.” Shakespeare may have known Bidpai’s work, which was translated into English in 1570. |
