词汇 contemplate one-s navel
词源
contemplate one’s navel. The first recorded mention of this expression is in Robert A. Vaughan’s Hours With the Mystics (1860): “They call these mystics Navel contemplators.” Vaughan’s mystics were meditating or reflecting on inner spir- itual matters, but over the years the phrase to contemplate one’s navel took on the additional meaning of excessive self- absorption, what is also called “navel-gazing.” The best example history offers of navel (or umbilicus, or belly button) gazing is that Guinness Book of Records record holder who for over a pe- riod of 15 years has collected some 51⁄2 ounces of lint (fluff) from his navel, his goal being enough lint to someday make a pillow. Now that is really contemplating one’s navel. See proud below the navel.
