词汇 cool
词源
cool. Everything is cool. That’s cool. Real cool. Cool, man. Cool. Truly, cool has become among the most used or overused work- horse words in the language and its use seems in no way to be abating, though some people believe the “cool” invasion “sucks” (often cool’s overused antonym). No one is sure where cool as a term of approval comes from. It could derive ultimately from the British English cool meaning impudent or insolent. According to this theory, the impudent meaning, first recorded in 1825, became extended to mean clever or shrewd by the time of World War I. This in turn probably yielded the black En- glish cool for great, excellent, superlative, which arose during the early years of the Great Depression and has become more common ever since. Cool meaning to be under control, dispas- sionate, as in play it cool, cool it, lose one’s cool, supercool, cool out, cool hand, and even the old saying cool as a cucumber, is a workhorse of a different color. It appears to ultimately date back to the year 1000, when it meant to cool down, be unemo- tional, and is found in the works of Chaucer and Shakespeare, among other great writers.
