conversation; criminal conversation. As early as 1511 con- versation was used as a synonym for sexual intercourse, Shake- speare employing it this way in Richard III (1594). Conversation derives from the Latin conversari “to turn oneself about, to move to and fro, pass one’s life, dwell, live somewhere, keep company with.” It was used in these senses long before it came to mean “to communicate by speech or writing” in the late 16th century. Converse no longer means to have sexual intercourse, but criminal conversation, used at least since the late 18th cen- tury, and often abbreviated to crim. con., is still a legal term for adultery.
