Bronx cheer. Long associated with baseball, the razz, or raspberry, called the Bronx cheer, wasn’t born in Yankee Stadi- um in the Bronx, the home of baseball’s New York Yankees, as many baseball fans believe. It may derive from the Spanish word branca, “a rude shout,” and possibly originated at the old National Theatre in the Bronx. We only know for certain that the term was first recorded in 1929 and that many players have received Bronx cheers in Yankee Stadium. |
