词汇 george spelvin
词源
George Spelvin; Harry Selby; Walter Plinge. Playwright Winchell Smith’s 1906 dramatization of George Barr McCutch- eon’s Brewster’s Millions, a perennial favorite, included among its cast members a “George Spelvin.” This was a second ficti- tious name given in the playbill to a member of the cast who played two parts. Since that day “George Spelvin” has had the same theatrical use. Though Smith’s play widely popularized the name, it had been used in this way as early as 1886 in Charles A. Gardiner’s Karl the Peddler. It has since been given to dolls substituted for infants, to animals, and even to dead bodies in movies and play credits, having been used well over 10,000 times in Broadway productions alone. At one time, a club of Broadway actors was called the Spelvin Club. “Harry Selby” is another fictitious name used in the same way but far less frequently. In England “Walter Plinge” is similarly em- ployed. One version of this story claims that the fictitious Wal- ter Plinge was a genial bartender working at a pub near the Lyceum Theatre about 1900. His policy of easy credit endeared him to the players, who immortalized his name in print. See alan smithee.
