Gentlemen, get in your cars. Words traditionally said to drivers at the start of the Indianapolis 500, America’s premier race-car event. An extremely dangerous race, it inspired one sportswriter to change the words to “Gentlemen, get in your coffins.” (I am unsure of the identity of the writer [the New York Times’s Ira Berkow?]. Perhaps some reader could be of help). Another famous phrase from Indianapolis is “Gentlemen, start your engines.” |
