Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1925) was the title of the Anita Loos (1893–1981) novel, but the words in the text were, “Gentlemen always seem to remember blondes.” Her famous book, made into a play and movie, had such diverse admirers as James Joyce, George Santayana, Mus- solini, and Churchill, and was written as a spoof of her good friend Mencken’s taste for “dumb blondes.” Loos herself was a brunette and wrote a sequel to her book, But Gentlemen Marry Brunettes (1926), among over a hundred books and screen- plays, including her script for D.
