geoduck. The geoduck clam (Panope generosa) of the Pacific Coast and elsewhere is pronounced “qweduc” by Webster’s and “gooeyduck” by its diggers. This enormous intertidal clam takes its name from the Nisqualli geoduck, “dig deep.” The clam indo- lently suns itself on warm days, its huge neck so prominent emerging from the sand, the West Coast Cookbook (1952) tells us, “that ladies of an earlier day stayed at a discreet distance when their men went hunting them . . . the hunt of the reclin- ing geoduck, it was hinted, not being quite nice.” The geoduck is hard to catch. As soon as the huge clam senses danger, it be- gins digging furiously into the sand and one has to dig all the faster; two people are usually required to beat the clam at its game.
