Brinell hardness, etc. A Brinell machine or tester determines the hardness of a metal, especially steel, by forcing a hard steel or tungsten carbide ball into it under a fixed hydraulic pres- sure. By dividing the force applied by the indenter into the sur- face area of the indentation made, the metal’s Brinell number is obtained, this indicating its relative Brinell hardness on the scale. The machine and method were devised by the Swedish engineer, Johann August Brinell (1849–1925), who first dem- onstrated his famous invention at the Paris International Expo- sition of 1900.
