cheri. A nice story has it that cheri for a charming, adorable, often young woman, may come to us from Rose Cheri, the stage name of a French actress who appeared in Paris from 1840 to 1860. “She was a singularly pure woman,” writes J. Red- ding Ware in Passing English (1909), “and an angelic actress. The word [first became] used by upper class men in society . . . to describe the nature of their mistresses.” But nice story or naughty there is no absolute proof of the Rose Cheri derivative, and the word may simply come from the French chère, mean- ing “dear,” “sweetheart.”
