词汇 | brier |
词源 | brier. The brier from which pipes are made has no connec- tion with the thorny bush called the brier. Rather, pipes are made from the roots of the tree heath, which was called bruyer in Old English; this name was corrupted to brier over the cen- turies. The tree heath (Erica arborea) is a small tree 10–20 feet high with long, fragrant flowers. It is popular in southern Eu- rope. A “brierpatch child” or “brierpatch kid” is a term for an illegitimate child. This Americanism dates back at least a cen- tury. See cabbage. |
