词汇 plankton
词源
plankton; plankter; nekton. Because it is the ocean’s basic food, plankton is often called the pasture or grass of the sea. The word derives from Greek planktus, meaning “wandering or drifting.” The term plankton collectively describes all the one-celled drifting life of the oceans, as opposed to nekton, which refers to strong swimmers such as fish, crabs, and whales (and even man in some cases). Possibly the most in- genious planktonic creature is the little animal called Oikop- leura, which builds itself an underwater “glasshouse.” The Oikopleura creates an envelope around itself, inflating it with a flow of water by moving its tail. This razor-thin jelly house traps the creature’s food, water flowing through openings at both ends and being filtered through mesh nets that filter out minute plankton for Oikopleura to eat. Each resourceful Oikopleura plankter (the name for individual planktonic or- ganism) has an emergency escape hatch at the rear of the house that is used when the fine-meshed nets become clogged and it has to leave home to build a dwelling elsewhere.
