plantain. One of our worst lawn and garden weeds, plantain takes its name from its leaves, which resemble the sole of the foot (the Latin word for “sole of the foot” is planta). The banana-like fruit called plantain doesn’t share this derivation; its name is a corruption of the native West Indian word for the fruit. The eastern plane tree, however, does have broad leaves and takes its name from the Greek plantanos, “broad.” See plant. |
