playboy. A man, usually rich, devoted to the pursuit of plea- sure. The term was not invented by Hugh Hefner with his mag- azine of that name. Playboy actually dates back to about 1620 in England. The word fell into disuse for a long period of time and was revived in New York City in about 1900 as a synonym for a bon vivant, a man about town. |
