A good example of folk etymology (popular etymology as it is sometimes called) which, as Tom McArthur states in The Concise Oxford Companion to the English Lan- guage (1996) is the thoughts of “non-academic people about the origins, forms and meanings of words, sometimes resulting in changes to the words in question.” Thus, the term plantar wart, a wart on the sole of the foot (plantar, Latin for sole of the foot) was changed by folk etymology into planter’s wart. |
