词源 | play footsie. Since at least World War II, play footsie referred to expressing amorous interest in someone by furtively rubbing a bare foot against that person’s body. It can also mean to pass signals under a card table to a partner and to cooperate or curry favor with someone in a sly, devious way. “Whatsa matter with ya, playin’ footsie with the Commies,” Thelma Ritter says in the movie Lo (1946). |
