tangerine. This fruit is called the “kid-glove orange” because its loose skin can be peeled off as easily as soft kid gloves can be peeled off the hands. But it is far better known as the tangerine after the seaport Tangier in Morocco, where the small deep- orange fruit was extensively cultivated and first called the “tan- gerine orange.” Tangerines belong to the mandarin group of or- anges, which were first cultivated in southeast Asia. Residents of Tangier are called Tangerines. The word Tangerine also means a resident of Tangier. |
