词汇 | haw |
词源 | haw. The fruit of the Old World or English hawthorn (Cra- taegus monogyna), which can be red or yellow, is called “haw” or “hall.” These names are also used for hawthorns themselves. In the language of flowers, hawthorn is the symbol of “good hope” because it is a spring flowering tree that shows winter is over. Commonly called the “thornapple” for its thorny trucks, which make impenetrable barriers, the hawthorn’s lovely flow- ers were used to crown Athenian girls at weddings, and the Ro- mans placed leaves of the hawthorn on the cradles of newborn infants to ward off evil spirits. In China, the fruit or haws of the Asiatic hawthorn is considered a delicacy. |
