词汇 | have one-s innings |
词源 | have one’s innings. Inning has its roots in British cricket where innings (always spelled with an s but considered singu- lar) means a time at bat for a batsman, because that player is “in” at bat while the opposition team is “out” on the field. It is from the cricket innings, not baseball’s borrowing of it, that we get the expression to have one’s innings, one’s opportunity or chance or one’s time at bat, as it were. Other expressions stem- ming from cricket include to keep one’s end up, to catch up, and to bowl over. See also bowl over; cricket. |
