词汇 | have the luck of hiram smith |
词源 | have the luck of Hiram Smith. Few, if any, soldiers have been as unlucky as Hiram Smith, who fought in the Aroostook War of 1836–39, a war between New Brunswick and Maine over land near the Aroostook River on the U.S.-Canadian bor- der. When New Brunswick sent loggers into the area, Maine authorities recruited a force to eject them. There were several clashes between 1838 and 1839 before an agreement was reached by General Winfield Scott’s troops, the conflict known as the “Bloodless War.” However, one person was killed in the war—luckless Hiram Smith, the only person to die in the entire war, whose luck was at least as bad as any soldier before or since. |
