This was called to have the age, and the poker term began to be used outside the game, as when Mark Twain in a 1907 magazine article wrote, “How could I talk when he was talking? He ‘held the age,’ as the poker-clergy say.” Soon the age in the expression became edge, due to the similar- ity in pronunciation and the aptness of edge in the phrase, and to have the edge came to mean to have any advantage.
