The world’s first supermarket was the a & p, the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co., which was founded by tea merchant George Huntington Hartford in 1859 in New York City and had stores across the country by 1917. But the word supermarket didn’t come into the language until the early 1920s in California. It was probably first applied to one of the stores in the Piggly-Wiggly self-service chain. |
