pogrom. Strictly speaking, pogrom is a Russian word mean- ing a riot. Pogroms were little known before 1881, when Czar Alexander II was assassinated, and were not heard of for some 20 years after that, until they inspired the first Russian-Jewish emigration to America. There were soon numerous Russian pogroms but the Nazi kristallnacht has been called the worst pogrom or riot in modern history. See kristallnacht. |
