词汇 poes of princeton
词源
Poes of Princeton. Edgar Allan Poe is arguably America’s best-known poet. Few are aware, however, that he was an excel- lent athlete as well. Poe, who would hardly suggest anything but an emaciated aesthete today, long jumped 21 feet while at West Point. He was as good a swimmer as Lord Byron (who swam the Hellespont), and once swam 71⁄2 miles from Rich- mond to Warwick, Virginia, “against a tide running two to three miles an hour.” Another time he boxed the ears of and horsewhipped a scurrilous critic. He is also remembered for the Poes of Princeton, football players famous in their time if now all but forgotten. They were six members of the 1899 Prin- ceton College football team, each named Poe and each a great- nephew of the poet. All of them apparently inherited Uncle Edgar’s athletic prowess, but none his poetic genius off the field. See baltimore ravens
