Poet’s Poet. A title first given in history to English poet Ed- mund Spenser (1552?–99), best known for his poem The Faerie Queen, which was written in the Spenserian stanza he invented. Spenser served many years as secretary to the lord deputy of Ireland, until in 1598 his castle was burned down during an Irish uprising and one of his children perished in the fire. He died the following year, in London, never recovering from the tragedy. |
