This fearsome bear has also been called the sil- vertop, because the ends of its hair are silver gray; the mule bear, because early prospectors thought it found their mules es- pecially tasty; and Moccasin Joe, because its footprints some- what resemble those of a man wearing moccasins. Indians in California called the bears Josmites, “the killers,” a word still preserved in the name of the Yosemite Valley and Yosemite Na- tional Park. The great beasts were given the name grizzly, how- ever, because of their grayish color, not from the word grisly meaning horrible or terrible. |
