The mischievous or impish are called puckish after the sprite in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shake- speare coining the proper name Puck from puck, for “a mali- cious demon,” but creating a character far more merry and at- tractive. It is Puck who speaks Shakespeare’s immortal line: “Lord, what fools these mortals be!” |
