public relations. American publicity writer Eddie Bernays (1891–1960), a nephew of Sigmund Freud, is said to have coined the name public relations in May 1920 as a respectable way to describe his profession—in the wedding announce- ments heralding his marriage. Bernays had previously estab- lished the first firm doing such work, though the term public relations had been recorded as far back as the early 19th centu- ry. Since about 1942 PR has been used as an abbreviation of public relations. |
