puke. Puke for to vomit is probably an onomatopoetic word and is first recorded in Shakespeare’s As You Like It (1599): “At first the infant, mewling and puking in his nurse’s arms.” Puke is also an old nickname, still used occasionally, for an inhabit- ant of Missouri. No one seems to be sure why the name was be- stowed upon Missourians, though several explanations have been given. One of the earliest references claims that the first settlers in St. Louis ate poisonous wild greens that caused a vir- tual epidemic of puking. See also show-me state. |
