public; pub. Public for people generally and collectively comes from the Latin publicus, meaning the same, which in turn derived from the Latin populus, the people. The term pub for a bar or tavern, used in England and much less frequently in America, is an abbreviation of public house. Pub is for some reason still called “low colloquial” by the O.E.D. The word isn’t recorded until 1865, public being the contraction used before it. |
