public intellectual. A writer or thinker who “addresses a general audience on matters of broad public concern,” accord- ing to Rick Perlstein, writing in the New York Times (1/22/02). The term was coined by Russell Jacoby in his book The Last In- tellectuals: American Culture in the Age of Academe (1987) but doesn’t seem to have made the dictionaries yet. As examples of public intellectuals Mr. Perlstein names George Orwell, Lewis Mumford, and Hannah Arendt, among others. |
