词汇 | public be damned |
词源 | public be damned. In 1882 a reporter asked William Henry Vanderbilt why the New York Central Railroad had continued to run a high-speed train from New York City to Chicago de- spite the fact that it was losing money. Commodore Vander- bilt told him he did it to compete with a similar Pennsylvania Railroad train. Wouldn’t you run it just for the benefit of the public, competition aside, the reporter continued, and Van- derbilt roared the classic reply that has unfortunately become associated with big business ever since: “The public be damned! Railroads are not run on sentiment but on business principles.” |
