词汇 | scovilite |
词源 | Scovilite. One of a band of Carolina thieves put down by the Regulators. According to Joseph Johnson, Traditions in the South (1851): “The culprits . . . appealed to the royal governor for protection, and he sent a commissioner among them to ad- just their differences. This was Colonel Scovil, who, instead of redressing the grievances on both sides, armed the depredators and paraded them for battle; they were, consequently, called Scovilites.” |
