词汇 | prime minister |
词源 | prime minister. The term is recorded as early as 1646, but the first English prime minister generally recognized as such was Sir Robert Walpole (1676–1745). Walpole rejected the title because he considered it an abusive term; indeed, as the OED notes, quoting a 1733 magazine: “In Countries where Royal Prerogative is limited by Laws, the name of prime Minister has always been odious.” In any case, prime minister was at first only a descriptive designation; it did not become an official title in England until 1910. A masterful politician with great influ- ence over George II and Queen Caroline, Walpole is said to have spent over 50,000 pounds annually in subsidizing news- papers and magazines that supported his political beliefs. He was also the first chief minister to reside at no. 10 downing street. See president. |
