词汇 press notice
词源
press notice. Press notice, meaning praise in the newspapers for an actor’s performance, a writer’s book, etc., dates back to about 1885, when the term press agent is first recorded, and is still heard in good advice such as “Don’t believe your press no- tices.” It may have been coined by Mark Twain, who first used the term. A prolific word inventor, Twain is said to have coined or popularized barbed wire, billiard parlor, cussword, dust storm, ex-convict, Wild West, forty-niner, hayride, and race prejudice, among other words and phrases. But Twain also coined a number of losers, words that are rarely if ever used to- day, including: disenthuse, human-beingship, jumbulacious, mental telegraphy, perhapser, psychologizes, Shakesperiod, type girl, uncledom, and vinegarishly.
