词汇 | priapus |
词源 | priapus. The name of the Greek and Roman god Priapus has come to mean a representation of a phallus, and the adjective priapic means “relating to or overly concerned with masculini- ty.” Originally, however, Priapus, said to be the son of Aphro- dite and Dionysus, was a fertility god of gardeners whose statue was often placed in home gardens. Represented as a grotesque, deformed creature with a huge penis, he was thought by the Roman poet Virgil to be “little more than a venerable scare- crow” used to keep birds and thieves away from the fruits and vegetables. |
