The English poet Edmund Spenser invented elfin, “of an elfish nature, like an elf,” in The Faerie Queene (1589), where he writes about an “elfin knight.” Some say the word was sug- gested to Spenser by the phrase elvene land, “land of elves,” or the proper name Elphin in the Arthurian romances.
