elephant. When the Romans first encountered the elephant, they called it the Lucamian ox, never having seen the great beast before. Another story, however, holds that elephant is a corruption of Infanta de Castile. The largest living land mam- mal, the elephant is of the Indian or African genera. African bulls are often more than 11 feet tall and Indian bulls about nine feet. African elephants also have huge flapping ears. First trained by Ptolemy II for war, the beasts were used by Alexan- der the Great and Hannibal when he crossed the Alps. In one bloody battle at Ipsus over 480 elephants were used. See jumbo.
