词汇 electrocute
词源
electrocute; electric chair. There was no need for a word meaning “put to death by electricity” before Thomas Edison began using electricity to light cities beginning about 1875. But many workers lost their lives in Edison’s great endeavor, and such a word did become necessary. From numerous new coin- ages Americans came to prefer electrocute, an invented word (source unknown) formed from the Greek electro and the cute in the word execute. Electrocute also came to mean “to execute a criminal with electricity,” after the electric chair was invented in 1889 and murderer William Kemmler was put to death in one at New York’s Auburn State Prison. See electricity.
