词汇 | ellis island |
词源 | Ellis Island; Castle Garden. Ellis Island was the United States’s chief immigration station from 1892 until 1943. Previ- ously Castle Garden, an old Dutch fort that had been converted into a noted opera house and amusement hall, had processed immigrants from 1855 to 1892 in Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan. Located in upper New York Bay, Ellis Island originally occupied three acres but was built up with landfill to 27.5 acres to accommodate the millions of people arriving there. During its use as an immigration center from 1892 to 1943, the Ellis Island facilities processed 16 million immigrants, roughly 70 percent of all immigrants to the United States in that period. People arriving there were screened for various undesirable factors such as contagious illnesses or mental defi- ciency before being granted entry to the United States. When the government began screening prospective immigrants in their native countries, Ellis Island fell into disuse. The govern- ment offered it for sale in the 1950s but could not find an ade- quate buyer, and the island eventually became a national monu- ment under the care of the National Park Service. In 1998, most of Ellis Island officially became part of New Jersey after many years of legal debate over whether it actually belonged to that state or New York. Ellis Island was once called “Oyster Is- land” because of the abundant oysters in its waters. It was also called the “Isle of Tears,” after the many people who were re- jected at the center. See steerage. |
