Bonanza, for a rich body of gold or silver ore in a mine, or any rich strike, began life as a Spanish word meaning “fair weather at sea.” Miners in California probably learned the word from seamen, who also used it to mean prosperity in gen- eral, and applied bonanza to any rich vein of ore.
