G-man. In about 1932 the name G-man originated in the un- derworld for special agents of the Department of Justice, Divi- sion of Investigation, who had been organized since 1908. Criminals meant government men when they coined G-men, which the newspapers and the movies quickly adopted. Feds, Dee Jays and Whiskers (for Uncle Sam’s Agents) were other names G-men were called by, the last two designations obsolete today. See f.b.i. |
